Upper Sûre Lake (or Haute-Sûre), around half an hour’s drive from La Sapinière, provides the setting for many water sports. Around 2 kilometres from the main dam, outside the protected area, you can go swimming, canoeing, diving, surfing or sailing. The only sounds you’ll hear are splashes and people chatting. This is because motorised boats are not allowed on the lake.
With an area of 380 hectares, this large reservoir at Esch-sur-Sûre is the largest area of water in Luxembourg and is situated in the middle of Haute-Sûre national park in the Luxembourg Ardennes, stretching across no less than five municipalities. This national park is also the perfect place for a brisk hike or a challenging mountain bike tour.
The giant lake was created as a drinking water reservoir in the 1950s and meanders through a narrow valley. Today, the lake still provides fresh drinking water and generates electricity for a large part of Luxembourg. Did you know that no less than 70% of Luxembourg’s population is dependent upon the lake for tap water?
The lake is also a popular place for diving and, with an average depth of 30 to 35 metres, is ideal for both beginners and experienced divers alike.
