Vianden Castle

Medieval masterpiece overlooking a fairytale town

Vianden Castle rises above the small town of Vianden and is one of the most stunning castles in Luxembourg – and arguably in all of Europe. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, it blends Romanesque and Gothic architecture and once served as both fortress and luxurious residence for the Counts of Vianden.

The castle was constructed on the remains of a Roman fort and Carolingian refuge. Its most iconic features – the chapel and two stately residences – date from the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Until the 14th century, the powerful Counts of Vianden resided here, closely tied to the imperial court. In 1820, under King William I of the Netherlands, the castle was sold and fell into disrepair. It has been state-owned since 1977 and carefully restored.

The castle is open daily from 10:00 AM, with closing times between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM depending on the season. Book your tickets here. Check upcoming events here.
